Hughes 52 as Academy set out their victory stall

Jack Hughes, whose 52 led the way for Yorkshire Academy

Jack Hughes, above, top-scored with 52 as Yorkshire Academy established their promise with an outright 38-run victory over Sheffield Collegiate in the Solly Sports EBC Yorkshire County Premier League.

Collegiate skipper Matt Dixon invited the Academy to bat - and with only five on the board Callum Geldart was bowled by Hancock. Fellow opening bowler Josh Jones accounted for Irfan Amjad and Jack Hargreaves for four each, and the batting was struggling.

Opener Alex Lees was still there, playing some good shots off his back foot, and he was
joined by Hughes, who initially dug in and was intent to occupy the crease. They put on 69 with Hughes becoming the more dominant player, particularly severe on anything short.

The opening bowlers had seven overs each before giving way to the off-spin of Joe Root and left-arm spin of Nadeem Khan. Lees was lbw to a delighted Joe - who took a fine diving catch off Khan to dismiss Hughes, who with Lilley turned the game in Academy's favour.

Lilley's 32 in 48 balls pushed the score on. He was joined by David Girling, who stroked the ball well and closed on an excellent 28 not out.  Gurman Randhawa batted sensibly, and saw the total to 189-6 after the allotted 55 overs. It was a useful total when showers interrupted the innings a number of times.

Openers Nick Gaywood and Joe Root were not together long: yet again Root was lbw playing across a straight one. Jack Hargreaves  had William Root caught behind, and when Hargreaves bowled Sri Lankan Under-19 player Wijayasiri for three Collegiate were 22-3.

The experience of Gaywood and Ed McKenna countered the quicker bowlers, and it was left to left-arm spinner Hughes to capture the wicket of Gaywood with a shot he could not be proud of. McKenna continued to punish  any ball off line or short, and he made an excellent 81 before he fell to Hughes and a sharp catch by Randhawa at square-leg.

The wickets then tumbled, Collegiate crumbling from 140-6 to 151 all out, and the last five batsmen all failed to reach double figures. An outright win for the young Academy team.

It was a victory which must have pleased the coaches - and it did prove that this young team has ability. They must continue to believe in themselves, and further success will come.
