Anthony McGrath, pictured, blasted his way to 107 with 10 fours and four sixes in an outing with Yorkshire Academy – but he could not prevent Academy’s five-wicket defeat by Castleford in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.

Yet man of the match was Castleford’s David Wainwright: the sometime Yorkshire first-teamer took 5-59 with his slow left arm – and followed this up with a pace-setting 101 not out to snuff out any hopes of an Academy victory.

Yorkshire opted to bat, but openers Alex Lees and George Ross were both caught at the wicket: 25-2. Jack Leaning joined McGrath, who was then on five - and the pair had staged a magnificent stand of 122 when Leaning, 41, tried to glide one to leg from Wainwright, and was bowled around his legs. Jack had batted for 86 minutes and struck four fours in a superb partnership which started slowly but picked up speed as McGrath became the more dominant.

Jonathan Tattersall and David Girling both fell to Wainwright, who bowled 19 excellent overs. McGrath heaved four towering sixes - two over long-on and two over long-off – and his 100 came up with a maximum off Wainwright. This innings should go a long way towards helping Anthony to recover his confidence at a higher level.

McGrath fell to an injudicious shot trying to move things on in the 53rd over. The bowler? Wainwright! John Randerson took the bulk of the punishment, finishing with 0-80 in 14 overs.

Wicket-keeper Henry Chadwick scored his 17 runs in 15 balls to push the Academy past the 200 marks - a very good recovery from a poor start. There were excellent opening spells from left-armer Chris Young and the economical Castleford captain Andrew Bourke – eight overs, four maidens and one wicket for a miserly eight runs.

Girling opened the Academy attack, and in his fourth over he had Le Roux, seven, caught behind by Chadwick. Braydon Clark fell three overs later, clean bowled by Johnny Moxon who was making his debut for the Academy league team. Hopkinson, 10, was a victim of the medium-paced McGrath, while Dominic Sharp was leg-spinner Tattersall’s only scalp.

Bourke played a sound innings, but he was not initially the pace-setter. That task fell to Wainwright, who walked to the crease at 30, and was joined by Bourke when the fourth wicket fell on 106. Wainwright and Bourke enjoyed a glorious partnership of 81 – taking away any chance the Academy had of gaining six or even maximum points.

The 200 came up the 48th over with a single to Wainwright, which also completed his century. Jamie Pickering made the winning hit, but it was Wainwright's day - 101 not out and 5-59. Castleford fully deserved their six points, but Yorkshire must have been pleased with McGrath's long innings.
