Impressive Bears beat Yorkshire in Barbados rain
News categories
The Bears made it a limited overs double against Yorkshire at Banks CC as they triumphed in a 40-over contest by 34 runs.
Warwickshire had made 228-9 from their 40-overs, although they had seemed destined for much more after Keith Barker cracked an excellent 65 from 68 balls and as the son of a former Barbadian player, with much local support, would have enjoyed his day.
Richard Pyrah, Yorkshire's captain for the day, rang the changes at regular intervals to stem the tide and some isciplined bowling from Steve Patterson (3-45), Lee Hodgson (2-24) and James Lee (2-31) saw Warwickshire's final score lower than they would have hoped at the halfway stage of the innings and an excellent fielding display contained the run chase.
It has been pleasing to see David Wainwright continue the good form he showed in the Twenty20 Cup at the weekend. The old accuracy and flight is back.
Yorkshire's openers, Joe Sayers (34 from 36 balls) and Gary Ballance (47 from 68) added 67 runs for the 1st wicket and at 109-1 at the start of the 23rd over my money was on Yorkshire. Joe Sayers had his best display of the tour so far with one pulled six the highlight.
But Yorkshire lost five wickets for 15 runs in 32 balls to slump to 124-6 when the heavens opened. Gary Ballance and David Wainwright would feel particularly agrieved as they were dismissed as the rain fell and the wicket became increasingly damp.
When play resumed the task of the run chase proved too much for the lower order despite 32 in 32 balls from the impressive Lee Hodgson and 23 in 20 balls from Azeem Rafiq.
Barker with 3 wickets capped his Man of the Match display and Chris Metters took 3-22.
Yorkshire's last wicket fell with the score on 194 with 2.1 overs of the innings unplayed and Warwickshire won by 34 runs.
I've been impressed by Yorkshire on this trip. The never say die attitude is there for all to see and the spirit in the camp is good. I've also been impressed by Warwickshire who have shown the best form of the five counties out here - they will be a tough side to beat in limited overs cricket in 2011.
