In-a-spin Academy batting crumbles to leaders
News categories
Jack Hargreaves, above, stood out with 58 as Yorkshire Academy's batting crumbled and they lost to York by 25 runs in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.
York's left-hand spinner Dan Woods laid the Academy low with 7-55, but a tally of three stumpings is among the disappointments the coach will want to ask the batsmen about.
The Academy lost the toss, took the field against the League leaders, and made a quick inroad as Jack Leaning took a superb catch low down at square-leg to dismiss Dan Wilson in the ninth over bowled by James Wainman.
This brought to the crease Simon Mason, York's prolific scorer this season: he did not disappoint, although he lost opening partner Duncan Snell for 24, beaten by Alex Lilley's pace. With 102 on the board Liam McKendry, 15, fell to Ben Coad. Alex Collins was run out by an excellent direct throw from the deep to put York on 123-4.
Nick Kay, 16, and Mason put on 40, but Kay was lbw to left-hand spinner Gurman Randhawa. Mason was well caught in the deep when skipper John Blain returned to the attack - but York were grateful for his fine 86, which contained nine fours. He had seen it to 165-6, and York would have struggled without him.
York closed at 197-8 an innings reduced by rain to 47 overs. Blain returned the excellent figures of 3-34 in his 11 overs, and Wainman had a fine economy rate of 3.14.
With Callum Geldart absent on an England Under-19 training week, Blain opened with Alex Lees, but at 19 Blain was caught behind by Nigel Durham. Lees, after some shaky running between the wickets, advanced to 22 before he was lbw to Bartram. Irfan Amjad soon followed when spinner Woods was introduced.
This brought together two Jacks - Hargreaves and Leaning. They batted and ran together extremely well - putting on 90 before Leaning was lbw to Woods. The pair had looked in total control despite the defensive field set by skipper Marcus Wood.
Both Woods and leg-spinner Pringle had long spells - and in his 15th over Woods took three wickets: Hargreaves was another stumping victim, and Girling faced only one ball before he, too, was stumped off a reckless shot. Lilley was bowled by Woods, and the Academy had slumped from 152-4 to 160-7.
Wainman was yet another batsman to be stumped, and when Randhawa was bowled by Woods the Academy were on 171 with nine balls remaining. Nos. 10 and 11 survived to gain the Academy one point.
I am sure that the Academy batting coach will have been very disappointed with the middle and lower order: six batsmen failed to reach double figures, but there was some recompense with the Hargreaves/Leaning partnership. Woods finished with the excellent analysis of 7-55, but with three middle-order stumpings one questions whether they were taken or given?
