In-the-pink Sayers leads Seconds' victory romp

Joe Sayers: Guided Yorkshire home with 69 mot out

Cherry pink and apple blossom white – anyone remember the instrumental hit of the Fifties? - was the refrain on Yorkshire lips as the Seconds gained revenge for their defeat at the hands of Durham the previous day.

Yorkshire won at Weetwood yesterday by eight wickets, more than amply compensating for Wednesday's loss by two wickets.

Durham, batting first, were stung by the early Yorkshire attack which saw three wickets captured in five overs with a mere seven on the board. The ship was steadied through a fourth-wicket partnership of 76 between West Indian Gareth Breese and South African Keeton Jennings before Jennings fell in off-spinner Azeem Rafiq’s fourth over.

The day’s bowling accolade passed from Rafiq to left-hnd spinner Gurman Randhawa, who came on for the 28th over and emulated Rafiq’s best of the day before, taking 4-41 in his spell of nine overs.

Durham’s 163 all out with five overs to spare was unlikely to prove a challenge for a Yorkshire bolstered by Joe Sayers. It was not: the left-handed opener carried his bat for 69 of  the winning 164-2, ably assisted by Gary Ballance’s 14, Callum Geldart’s 21 and, last but by no means least, Alex Lees with 41. Sayers and Lees added 93 in Yorkshire's victory charge - the best stand of the day.

The opening sentence? This popular tune seemed appropriate for cricketers wearing whites but playing with a pink cherry!

The Seconds move into three-day cricket next week with a “friendly” against Derbyshire at  Belper Meadows. Normal rules, sorry, laws will apply!
