Jack Leaning 71 not out as Academy finish fourth

Jack Leaning: Held the Academy together to complete a fine run of success

Jack Leaning, pictured, maintained his fine form with 71 not out as Yorkshire Academy beat Barnsley by six wickets to finish fourth in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.

An incomplete win, because Barnsley were not bowled out – but what a final run-in! The Academy unbeaten in their last 10 League matches – and winners of the League Cup.

John Blain won the toss on a cloudy day with a damp wicket at Weetwood as the first team were winning over the road. He asked Barnsley to bat – and after three balls refusal of a quick single and an accurate throw from Matthew Fisher despatched Simon Widdup.

Steve Nuttall followed Widdup to the pavilion seven overs later when he provided Blain with an easy catch at mid-off, and Kunal Razdan and Matthew Wilson made steady but slow progress until Leaning caught Razdan to make it 22-3 after 16.4 overs. All of the first four Academy pace bowlers had economy rates  below two.

The total slowly rose to 60-4, when James Stuart was caught behind by Henry Chadwick off James McNichol, but Wilson advanced to 29 before he was trapped in front by off-spinner George Ross, who later claimed the wickets of Luke Bullingham for 27 and Tom Goldsby-West  for 10.

It was Josh Shaw who picked up the prize wicket of Richard Wilkinson, when he clean bowled the former Academy coach. His excellent figures of 2-12 in 9 overs with an economy rate of 1.33 were just reward for two fine spells. Once again Ben Coad is to be commended for his excellent line – 11 overs for 17 runs.

A stand of 36 by Nos. 8 and 9, Bullingham and Goldsby-West prevented Barnsley from being bowled out and Academy from securing a complete win, but at the start the hosts would have settled for 136-9 in 55 overs.

Opener Alex Lees was at Headingley Carnegie receiving the Academy Player of the Year Award, so wicket-keeper Chadwick went in with Jonathan Tattersall. Their partnerhip of 26 was a reasonable start on a pitch that had helped the quicker bowlers – but the Barnsley openers failed to take a wicket and Tattersall went on to a 36 stand with Leaning.

The off-spin of Razdan and Wilkinson made the Academy batsmen show caution, but Leaning batted superbly and held the team together with his undefeated 71 - which  included five fours and two sixes over mid-off. Ross, 21, and Leaning put on 33 valuable runs until Ross fell to a diving leg-side catch by wicket-keeper Bullingham.

Eddie Wilson was lbw to Wilkinson, but Leaning and McNichol ensured that the Academy continued their winning run. A six-wicket victory with 11 overs to spare – and the England Under-19 manager and Under-19 coach in  attendance. Word must have got around.

The Academy coaches must feel well satisfied with the second half of the season, and Blain must be very pleased with the improvement  throughout. An excellent finish to the 2011 season.
