Lee 6-67, but the Red Rose pricks young ones

Six of the best: Paceman James Lee, whose 6-67 was not enough to blunt the thorns of the Red Rose

Fast bowler James Lee, above, turned in a fine 6-67...but Lancashire beat Yorkshire by 96 runs in their Second Eleven Trophy match at Crosby - which probably ends Yorkshire's chances of retaining the Trophy - but it should be noted that seven of the 11 Yorkshire players were under 18.

Contrary to reports, there was no appearance for Lancashire from Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff, who was trying to come back from injury. The news was greeted with much disappointment by many spectators populating the boundary at Moor Park.

Lancashire won the toss, and duly batted - but Warren Goodwin wished otherwise as he was caught behind off the first ball he faced in Lee’s opening over. That was to be Yorkshire's only success in the first 30 overs as Karl Brown and Andrea Agathagelou broke the record for the second wicket in Trophy matches against the White Rose.

The South African of Greek background was caught by skipper John Blain in left-hand spinner Gurman Randhawa’s fourth over, but 50 runs were added before the third wicket fell in the 42nd over. If it was expected that the batsmen would run riot in the last eight overs the bowlers - in particular Lee - had other ideas.

The solitary wicket in Lee's first over was followed by 48 runs in his first seven overs and five wides...then his radar was recalibrated. He added two wickets in his next two overs - then rested for an over, only to come back for the last one and three more wickets. A return of 6-76 perhaps flatters his performance - but it was his personal best in the Trophy as Lancashire closed on 275-9.

Yorkshire included six Under-18s and two Under-17s in their lineup, and it was perhaps to be expected that they would struggle to get anywhere near the target. Alex Lees went in the first over, but a partnership of 50 between Callum Geldart and Billy Root, and one of 40 between Root and Gary Ballance saw nearly 100 on the board before the third wicket fell.

The fifth-change bowler, Aran Lilley, then made his mark on the match: bowling unchanged from the 22-over mark onwards, he took wicket after wicket to finish with better figures than Lee, his 6-30 being the best by a Lancastrian against Yorkshire in the Trophy.

There was the best part of a 30-run stand between Blain and debutant James Wainman - a record for the last wicket in the Wars of the Rosebuds, who must hope for better things in the Championship match which starts tomorrow on the same jousting ground.
