Lees 70 as spinners keep Academy in third place

Skipper Alex Lees, whose 70 with eight fours and a six and a stand of 120 with George Ross, set up this match for the Academy spinners

Skipper Alex Lees, above, led the way with 70 as Yorkshire Academy beat Sheffield Collegiate by 28 runs and held on to third place in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League yesterday. It was a good day for spinners.

By winning the toss and having a good opening partnership teams are usually successful at Weetwood - and the Academy had their season's best start as left-handers Lees and George Ross, 51, shared a first-wicket stand of 120.

Lees was the first to go, stumped by Alex Patmore off skipper Matt Dixon, and as so often happens after a big stand more wickets fell - Irfan Amjad lbw to Dickson eight runs later for a duck, and then Ross caught by Nick Gaywood, again off Dixon.

Jack Hargreaves followed his excellent game on Saturday with a sound 37 containing five fours and a six, but yet again an Academy player was stumped. Jack Hughes accelerated the scoring with an aggressive 30 runs including two fine sixes before falling to a hard chance well taken at mid-wicket by Billy Root.

Alex Lilley pushed things on with 17 not out off 22 balls, but a further stumping occurred when David Girling tried to force the pace. 230-7 in the allotted 55 overs. Nadeem Khan and Dixon bowled 37 overs between them, and shared seven wickets. How spinners love to visit Weetwood.

Gaywood and John Meakin made a steady start for Collegiate until Meakin was caught behind by Henry Chadwick off Ashley Robinson. The only Sheffield wicket taken by a paceman. Yet again Wainman was very economical, bowling six miserly overs for nine runs.

William Root, brother of Joe, set out his stall to hold the middle-order together: his 56 runs were made in 105 minutes, but once Alex Patmore was bowled by left-hand spinner Gurman Randhawa the middle-order crumpled.

Only the top four batsmen reached double figures - Randhawa and Hughes sending down 18 and 17 overs. Gurman took 4-60 and Jack 3-59. Unfortunately for the Academy the undefeated eighth-wicket pair put on 19 runs, and Sheffield salvaged a point.

The Academy's six points were well deserved on the day their batting was slightly superior to Collegiate's, and they hold on to third place in the League - 25 points behind York, who have 110, and 20 behind Barnsley.
