Lees and his boys show Yorkshire how to win

Alex Lees: Captain's innings of 72 not out and a much-needed victory

Victory-starved Yorkshire have something to celebrate – the Academy beat Appleby Frodingham by eight wickets in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League yesterday.

It was a great day for skipper Alex Lees, pictured, who walked in at the end with 72 not out, a true captain’s innings. He did not start so well – losing the toss at Weetwood to Frodingham, who lay seven points above Yorkshire in the table.

The visitors elected to bat as James Wainman and James McNichol replaced John Blain and Henry Chadwick, who had played on Saturday. Going in first does not always bring immediate success for the batting side - and certainly not yesterday, where the hosts collected four wickets for 62 runs.

Captain Matt Morland was caught behind by Eddie Wilson off Will Rhodes, and Rhodes struck again when he had South African Brandon Handley caught by Jonathan Tattersall. James Pickersgill gave Wilson a second victim, this time off David Girling, who also trapped Nick White in front for a duck – White's last innings before his return to New Zealand.

Matt Fowler and Robert Day pushed the total on to 107, but then Day became Wilson’s third scalp as Wainman enjoyed his only success. Tattersall's leg-spin proved too much at the end as he took 3-28 in his 11 overs to help to clear up the lower order. Rhodes gave his best performance with the ball this season - finishing with a miserly 3-14 off 10 overs.

Lees went in first with McNichol, and they had  passed the half-century mark when McNichol was caught at mid-off for 17. George Ross, likewise on 17, fell to 15-year-old James Forrester, and at 24 overs the board showed 66. Lees now settled into an excellent partnership with Jack Leaning, who ran to 41 not out with seven fours. Lees himself struck nine fours, and finished with two boundaries hammered past the returning Forrester.

The Academy celebrated a comfortable outright win and eight points that took their total to  40 and seventh place – one point above Appleby Frodingham and three below Barnsley.
