A blow to Yorkshire wicket-keeper/batsman Gerard Brophy’s glove brought the suspension and then abandonment of Yorkshire’s Second Eleven Trophy match against Derbyshire at Marske-by-the-Sea. One point to each side.

It rained heavily the day before. Water got under the covers and left a damp patch which was believed to have mostly dried out between the covers being taken off and the captains and umpires meeting in the middle for the toss and agreeing to start play.

Yorkshire opted to bat...but once their innings started balls pitching on the damp patch misbehaved. Some kept low, and others bounced lethally at the batsmen’s body. Joe Sayers fended off one such delivery, only to be caught behind, and Brophy threw down his bat down as he was rapped heavily on the gloves.

This was the delivery that caused the umpires to suspend play at Windy Hill Lane after eight overs and, after inspecting the wicket 45 minutes later, to abandon the match, deeming the pitch too dangerous.

It was a great shame for the host club, who had put a lot of effort into promoting the match and generating interest. Let us hope we do not have to wait another 12 seasons before the Seconds return to Marske.
