Oliver Hannon-Dalby 5-29 in winning battle Royal

Oliver Hannon-Dalby: Clean bowled four of his five victims

Paceman Oliver Hannon-Dalby, pictured, turned in a match-winning 5-29 as the last Trophy match of the season saw Yorkshire Seconds pitch up for a battle royal at Worcester.

Captain John Blain won the toss and elected to bat for the umpteenth time this season – but left-hand opener Adam Lyth was caught behind second ball. From that setback Alex Lees and Jack Leaning established a run-a-ball partnership for the first 10 overs, but the loss of Lees at 61 saw the run rate fall below five an over - only five fours coming between the start of the 11th over and the end of the 34th.

There was a spirited revival as the batting power play was taken - and 54 runs were rattled up in the four overs, Dan Hodgson scoring six of his 10 fours in that play. He finished the innings with an unbeaten 88 off 86 balls, the best of the batsmen on the day.

Yorkshire’s 224 was going to be difficult to defend, but opening bowlers Hannon-Dalby and Iain Wardlaw captured two wickets each in the first eight overs to reduce Worcestershire to 36-4. Inevitably, perhaps, there followed stands of 36, 56 and 59 as the fielding restrictions were removed - the cornerstone of the stands being Tom Fell, who crafted 77 runs.

The capture of Fell, clean bowled by Hannon-Dalby at 185, in the 35th over, began the collapse that was to end the game. The last three wickets were blown away as the tail-enders struggled to add to the total, the end coming with the hosts 23 short of victory.

Hannon-Dalby’s 5-29 was a Trophy career-best, four of his victims clean bowled. Hopefully, he would take that form into the Championship match beginning next day at the same venue.
