Paceman Ben Sanderson, above, claimed 5-50, the best first-class figures of his career, as Yorkshire bowled out Loughborough MCCU on the final day of the three-day match at Headingley Carnegie.

The students' spirited 253 left Yorkshire with a first-innings lead of 95, and Yorkshire were 29-0 in their second innings when the match ended in a draw.

Left-arm spinner David Wainwright picked up the only wicket to fall on the third morning before sleet and bad light stopped play after 80 minutes. The umpires decided on an early lunch, with the students on 103-2 in 48 overs. David Murphy had moved carefully on to 33 from 90 balls with four boundaries, while skipper Alan Cope was on two.

It was another bitterly cold day as Loughborough resumed on 53-1 with opener Will Tavare on 24 and Murphy 11. Both made a slow start against Sanderson and fellow paceman Lee Hodgson before Tavare produced a classic cover-drive which would not have disgraced his uncle, Chris, the former England, Kent and Somerset batsman. In the same over he pulled a short ball for four through mid-wicket.

Skipper John Blain and Wainwright took over the attack, and when Tavare was 47 he hooked Blain straight into and out of the hands of Sanderson at long-leg. Tavare was unable to go on and complete the half-century he deserved because two runs later he fell lbw to Wainwright after battling away for 132 balls and striking six fours.

The weather had been bright at the start of the day, but it began to close in, and it was cold enough for light sleet to fall before the players sought the sanctuary of the pavilion. They returned to action at 1.15pm.

Murphy gave a chance on 39, when he edged Wainwright to slip, where Richard Pyrah put down the catch, and Cope then off-drove Wainwright for four. Murphy worked Sanderson off his legs to the boundary - and scampered a single to go to a well-merited half-century off 130 balls with seven fours. Both batsmen were to depart in consecutive overs: Cope played back to Sanderson to be  lbw for eight, and Murphy on 54 stepped in front against Wainwright.

Off-spinner Azeem Rafiq made a belated appearance in the attack at 134-4 in 61 overs - and the first ball of his second over knocked back the off-stump of former Academy batsman Alex Welsh.

The sturdy Harveer Gandam and Rob Taylor featured in a 50 stand, but the introduction of the second new ball at 188-5 in 80 overs brought about a sudden stutter of wickets. Sanderson returned to claim two in four balls - Taylor lbw and Gavin Baker edging to Brophy.

Ashraf, after bowling most economically, was rewarded with his first wicket in first-class cricket as Gandam became another lbw victim - and when Charl Malan went in the same way  it gave Sanderson a five-wicket haul. Peter Groves hit out heartily in a last-wicket stand of 52 with Simon Rose, and the end came at 253 when Rose was caught behind off Hodgson.

DAY 2: Richard Pyrah completed his century on the second day of Yorkshire’s match against Loughborough MCCU at Headingley Carnegie and was unbeaten on a career-best 134 at lunch when Yorkshire declared on 348-5.

It was the second first-class century of his career – and the second on the ground against Loughborough: he took 106 off their attack almost exactly three years’ ago.

There was time for Loughborough to advance to 53-1 during the afternoon - Ben Sanderson claiming the sole wicket - before rain washed out the evening session.

Yorkshire were 218-3 when they resumed with Pyrah on 65 and Gerard Brophy 62, but only 18 could be added in six overs before rain caused a 50-minute interruption.

On the restart Pyrah straight-drove Charl Malan for six - but the spinner claimed a wicket at 262 when Brophy gave a gentle catch to Harveer Gandam at cover and departed for 89 from 166 balls with 14 fours after the fourth-wicket pair had added 164 in 40 overs.

Lee Hodgson joined Pyrah, who continued to dominate - and there was no respite even when the new ball was taken, Pyrah cover-driving Baker for four and moving to his century from 157 deliveries with 10 fours and two sixes.

There was another six for Pyrah with a well-timed hook off Baker - which took him to a career-best 111. Hodgson also made progress with four boundaries in his first 22 as the stand hurried past the 50 mark. Baker was soaking up some punishment from Pyrah - who pulled him mightily into the West Stand for six, and in the next over Hodgson hit Simon Rose firmly through mid-wicket for four.

Pyrah continued his big hitting, but he lost Hodgson for 33 to the last ball before lunch, wicket-keeper Murphy holding a catch off Taylor. Captain John Blain decided to close the innings, Pyrah having struck 12 fours and five sixes off his 175 balls.

Will Tavare, nephew of former England, Kent and Somerset batsman Chris Tavare, opened for Loughborough after lunch with Rhodri Evans, who took 20 deliveries to get off the mark against the new-ball attack of Blain and Moin Ashraf - who started with three maidens.

Tavare played some clean-looking strokes, but only 36 runs came off the first 20 overs before Sanderson found some extra lift from the Kirkstall Lane end and Evans edged to wicket-keeper Brophy.

Hodgson joined Sanderson in the attack, but conditions were so murky that the players came off for an early tea with Loughborough on 53-1, Tavare 24 and Murphy 11. Rain set in, and intensified after the tea interval, and play was abandoned for the day at 4.40pm.

DAY 1: Richard Pyrah and Gerard Brophy both completed half-centuries in an unbroken stand of 120 for the fourth wicket on the first day of Yorkshire’s match against Loughborough MCCU at Headingley Carnegie.

 Brophy was 62 and Pyrah 65 when bad light ended play shortly before the close after the morning had been lost to rain. Joe Root and Gary Ballance opened the batting after John Blain had won the toss for Yorkshire, but Root managed only 14 before he fell lbw on the back foot to a ball from Gavin Baker which kept low.

Callum Geldart, making his first-class debut along with teammates Root and Moin Ashraf, joined Ballance who played some good attacking strokes - including a slashed six off Baker and consecutive cuts for four off Rob Taylor.

Peter Groves struck in his first over by having Ballance caught behind for 43 after facing 55 balls and striking seven fours and the six. Yorkshire were 48-2, but Geldart and Brophy remained firm until tea, when Geldart was 17 and Brophy 12. 

Geldart fell to the pacy Groves straight after the interval when the bowler found the edge for wicket-keeper David Murphy to take his second catch, but the innings was steadily rebuilt by Brophy and Pyrah who was in an aggressive mood.  Brophy had been in for 16 overs longer than his partner, but Pyrah overtook him when he pulled Baker for six to move to 38.

The partnership continued to flourish, and Pyrah galloped to his 50 off 69 balls with six fours and a six.  Brophy went to the landmark off 113 deliveries with 10 boundaries, but soon afterwards the light became too poor to continue.
