Plunkett returns to Yorkshire
News categories
As Liam boards his flight to head back to England, he will look back on his time with the DLCA as great preparation ahead of the summer. In the space of five weeks, Liam has bowled lots of overs in both club cricket and outdoor training, played in a three-day game in Melbourne and helped his club side Adelaide University reach a Grand Final in one-day cricket.
The final part of his time in Adelaide was the SACA Grade Cricket One-Day Final played on Adelaide Oval in a Day/Night game on Sunday.
Playing for his club Adelaide University, Liam and his teammates were looking to take the title from last year’s winners Tea Tree Gully CC, who are also the current T20 Champions.
University’s team including Plunkett consisted of Australian player Dan Christian, Australian A player Tom Cooper, Redback bowler Joe Mennie and Gloucestershire player Ed Young. Tea Tree Gullies team had teenage batting star of the future and Redback player Travis Head, Redback bowler Jake Haberfield and Redback keeper Tim Davey.
University won the toss and batted first in perfect conditions and quickly found themselves in trouble losing both Young and Christian in the third over. At 65-5, Plunkett strode to the crease on a rescue mission to give his side an opportunity to still win. His innings of 69 was well paced with singles and twos, and the odd boundary. Liam was finally dismissed deep into the innings and University had scrambled to 196 and still a chance to win.
Plunkett opened the bowling and found it difficult to get his rhythm and bowled an opening spell of five overs. Having not bowled in a game for two consecutive weekends, because his club had the bye, meant that his control initially was not quite what he wanted. The middle part of the innings, the game tightened up after a solid start by Tea Tree Gully, mainly due to the bowing of Mennie, Plunkett bowled a better second spell of three overs then a final spell of two overs towards the end of the innings.
In what was a great game of cricket, the Gullies got home with three balls to spare and added the One-Day crown to their T20 title.
Thank you to Liam for coming to the DLCA and good luck for the summer with Yorkshire back in Divison One.
