Richard Pyrah, right, led the way with three wickets and a match-winning 42 not out as Yorkshire Carnegie beat Durham Dynamos by two wickets in the Friends Provident Trophy at Headingley Carnegie today.

Thanks to Pyrah's wickets - and two apiece for Adil Rashid and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan - Carnegie restricted Dynamos to 166 after Yorkshire skipper Anthony McGrath had lost the toss for the sixth successive time in the competition.

Carnegie themselves collapsed to 130-8...and it took a swashbuckling do-or-die ninth-wicket stand between Pyrah and David Wainwright to pull them out of the mire.

There was a change to the home side with Adam Lyth coming in for another left-hander, Andrew Gale.

Phil Mustard and Kyle Coetzer put 20 on for the first wicket before Rana had Coetzer taken at slip by Jacques Rudolph, and when Pyrah came on he produced a good delivery which Will Smith edged to wicket-keeper Simon Guy. Pyrah continued to pose problems, and two wickets in five balls had Durham on 43-4: Mustard clipped low to Wainwright at mid-wicket after making a studious 20 in as many overs, and Dale Benkenstein gave Rudolph another slip catch.

A smart stumping by Guy off Rashid sent back the dangerous Ian Blackwell. Gordon Muchall struck Wainwright for a straight six - but was pinned lbw next ball. Rashid and Wainwright kept Durham subdued, and it was only useful contributions from the later batsmen that took the visitors to 166 before last-man Luke Evans was bowled by Deon Kruis with three balls left.

Disaster struck Carnegie at once:  Rudolph, from whom so much is always expected, touched the first ball of the innings from Liam Plunkett to wicket-keeper Mustard without a run on the board. McGrath joined Joe Sayers - who cheered up Yorkshire fans with a four off Mitch Claydon.

310x620_fitbox-mcgrath_bowled_fpt_may_13.jpegCarnegie progressed to double figures, and McGrath hooked Claydon over mid-wicket for four. Next ball McGrath survived a hard slash to Will Gidman at point.

Claydon gave way to Evans at the Kirkstall Lane End, and McGrath drove him exquisitely to the East Stand for four. Two balls later Anthony, left, went for a forcing back stroke, and ploughed Evans into his stumps. 30-2.

Sayers edged Evans through third-man for two, and next ball edged him to gully - where Gareth Breese put down a difficult chance falling to his right.

Light rain drove the players in at 47-2, Sayers 25 and Lyth 4, and after 15.4 overs Carnegie were level par under the Duckworth-Lewis Method.

The quicker men gave way to right-arm spinner Breese and left-hander Blackwell. Sayers and Lyth added 49 - but Lyth chipped a return catch to Blackwell to end a crisp innings of 26, with three boundaries.

Sayers ran to his 50 in 106 balls, with four fours, but Carnegie were falling behind the clock.

Rashid repeatedly rocked back to attack the cover field - but without success. Eventually in frustration he gave Breese the charge and was stumped by Mustard.

Sayers tried to sweep Blackwell, and was bowled off his pads for 51. Naved stepped back to give himself room against Blackwell, but was bowled. 114-6.

Deon Kruis went in to force the issue with Pyrah - he crashed Plunkett gloriously over extra-cover for four, but then he holed out to Breese at mid-wicket for seven. 129-7.

Will Smith bowled wicket-keeper Simon Guy off his forearm for a duck. 130-8.

Wainwright heaved Smith over long-on for four, and sliced the returning Plunkett through third-man to the rope. Pyrah smashed Smith for four over mid-wicket...and the pendulum had swung.

The last over began with Carnegie 161-8. Six wanted...Claydon to bowl: Pyrah put him through mid-wicket for two and through cover to the boundary. Carnegie had come back from the dead, and Pyrah's Man of the Match Award was richly deserved: his undefeated 42 in 49 balls included three fours, and Wainwright was not out 13. Blackwell was the best bowler for Durham with 3-26 in 10 overs.
