Record-low Yorkshire devoured by the Foxcubs

Ben Sanderson, whose three wickets were the most encouraging feature in a bad day for Yorkshire

A three-wicket bag for paceman Ben Sanderson, above, was the only good news after a terrible day for Yorkshire in their Second Eleven Trophy clash with Leicestershire at Headingley Carnegie.

The Foxcubs won the toss, cruised to 255-8 in their 50 overs – and then rolled Yorkshire over for 101 to win by 154 runs. One dared hardly look in the record book: it was Yorkshire’s worst Trophy total by four runs - and their largest defeat, by three runs - in 223 Trophy matches.

The main substance of the Foxcubs' innings was a partnership of 121 between Josh Cobb and Tom New -  both of whom notched a half-century. Their partnership was broken only when  Jordan Lowe stumped Cobb off Azeem Rafiq in the 41st over. Sanderson's three wickets cost 49 runs in nine overs.

Yorkshire got off to the worst of starts. Callum Geldart was caught and bowled off the last ball of the first over - and his opening partner, Joe Root, was bowled next ball. Debutant Alex Lees was caught off the last ball of the second over to leave the Rosebuds 11-3.

There was no way back from that. One stand managed 25 runs – the eighth between James Lee and Lowe – and only Lowe managed a quarter-century. The best part of 17 overs remained when the coup de grace was administered with Nadeem Malik’s 4-13 off seven overs being a personal career-best in the Trophy and the best of the visitors’ bowling.

The two sides meet again in the three-day Championship match at Shaw Lane, Barnsley, today (Tuesday), when the hosts must hope for better things.
