Openers Joe Root and Callum Geldart, above, put on 170 as poor bowling helped Yorkshire to victory by 68 runs in their Second Eleven Trophy match at Derby.

The hosts won the toss...preferred to field...and Root and Geldart got Yorkshire off to the best possible start before Root was dismissed for a hard-earned 63. Inevitably, Geldart followed, having accrued 79.

The stand was helped by some awful Derbyshire bowling - Mark Footitt was the major culprit as 30 extras contributed to the stand. The openers gave licence to the incoming batsmen to make merry - and 88 runs were added in 12 overs. To compound the bowlers’ misery the umpires awarded 12 penalty runs because Derbyshire had failed to bowl their overs in time.

It was inevitable that a former Academician would be a thorn in Yorkshire's flesh: John Sadler, coming in before the first over was complete, made the main contribution to Derbyshire's reply with 68, including seven fours and a six, but the Derbyshire innings collapsed when he was caught by Ben Sanderson off Jack Hargreaves - the last seven wickets going down for 48 runs

Derbyshire may regret that 58 extras were contributed to Yorkshire's total - the result could have been much closer if they had bowled with more discipline. Tomorrow, as is the style of the season’s fixture list, the two counties resume battle in the Second Eleven Championship. Will the bowlers have learned?
