Root earns England Increment Contract
News categories
The ECB today announced that Yorkshire batsman Joe Root has been awarded an England increment contract for 2012-13.
Root qualifies for the award by virtue of having played one Test match, one T20 and five ODIs against India as well as a T20 and an ODI during the current tour of New Zealand since the contract period began on October 1.
Non-contracted players can earn an England increment contract via a points system. Five points are awarded for a Test appearance and two for a T20 or ODI appearance, with an increment contract being awarded automatically once the player reaches 20 points during the 12-month contract period.
ECB National Selector, Geoff Miller, said: “Congratulations to Joe Root who has made his international debut in all three formats in a short period of time and has made important contributions for England so far this winter.”
Despite England losing today's opening one-day international against New Zealand in Hamilton, Root starred with the bat scoring 56 off 64 balls including four boundaries.England posted 258 all out from 49.3 overs with New Zealand chasing down their target of 259 with seven balls remaining and winning by three wickets.
