Rosebud record-setters let down by the rest
A record-breaking third-wicket partnership in the Second Eleven Trophy for Yorkshire against Lancashire by Callum Geldart, pictured, and Gerard Brophy could only flatter to deceive.
The Seconds’ Roses week began at Bingley with Lancashire romping home in the one-dayer with four overs to spare as top three Andrea Agathangelou, Louis Bentley and Luis Reece contributed two 70s and a 60 to bite a considerable chunk out of Yorkshire’s total.
The White Rosebuds batted first, and two wickets had gone down for 31 when Brophy joined Geldart. They put on a record-breaking 156 for the third wicket – Geldart reaching 85 and his partner 81 – but the remaining seven batsmen could muster only 47 runs in 11 overs at the wicket after Geldart and Brophy had gone...and Lilley bowled Lilley.
Oliver Newby finished Yorkshire off with three wickets in the last six balls he bowled to come in with 5-39, a fine performance by the experienced Lancastrian.
Yorkshire were going to need a similar performance from a bowler, but no one offered their services. The Red Rosebuds took an early lead in the chase, but slowed to match Yorkshire’s total at 30 overs. Was the bowling getting the upper-hand? Not at all! The batsmen stretched their legs and sprinted for the line, their opposition left gasping in their wake.
The win gave Lancashire first bragging rights in the fixtures double fixtures. Would they have the staying power for the longer Championship match beginning next day at Stamford Bridge?
