Ross 60, but Yorkshire Colts fail to dominate

Full ground at 2009 Test

Yorkshire batsmen failed to dominate and their bowlers offered too much width as Derbyshire won the 50-over Academy friendly match by five wickets at Staveley.

Derbyshire asked the visitors bat on a green wicket, and medium-pacer Pete soon had Johnny Booth lbw. Skipper Jack Leaning, 27, and left-hander George Ross, 60, then added 77 runs before Ross was caught behind off left-arm spinner Tom Knight.

Leaning fell to Sanderson 14 runs later, and with 33 overs completed there was a need to push on.  Will Rhodes and Josh Shaw were out in the the same over to spinner Burgoyne, and Derbyshire were on top. 142-5 in 40 overs did not look a winning score.

Barney Gibson and James Leaning took it to 198, but in the last over Gibson was run out. Poor running between the wickets was one of the causes of the limited total, but at no time did Yorkshire look like dominating the attack.

Tea was extended by a brief shower. Yorkshire struck immediately when opener Ikin was lbw to Wainman, but Tom Hamilton and Matt Fletcher put on 32 before Wainman had Hamilton caught low down at first slip by Booth.

Fletcher and Jack Clarke benefited from too much width as they put on 90 for the third wicket. Left-arm spinner Alex Leyshon, new to Yorkshire Academy this season, dismissed both batsmen - Gibson stumping Fletcher and skipper Leaning taking a catch at mid-on. Raheeb Ali gave Leaning his second catch off Ashley Robinson with 51 needed off 10 overs.

With dark clouds threatening wicket-keeper Durham and Mykylo Bird had an excellent middle-order stand of 52: their running between the wickets was excellent, and only four fours were struck in their partnership. It was a comfortable win for Derbyshire by five wickets with 16 balls to spare. We apologise for computer troubles, which have marred the layout of this scorecard.
