Sanderson rocks mates with all-round display

Ben Sanderson: Bowling, catching and batting to see his side to maximum points

All-rounder Ben Sanderson, pictured, was to the fore with two wickets, a catch and 64 not out as his club, Rotherham Town, despatched Yorkshire Academy by five wickets in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League.

Academy skipper Alex Lees must have thought that having the advantage of batting first on a good wicket should mean a good opening partnership – but Sanderson ruined that theory when he had James McNichol caught at the wicket by Gareth Pursehouse for six.

Lees himself reached 17 before he was caught by Sanderson off medium-pacer Nathan Smith, and at 43-2 a stand was needed: George Ross and Jack Leaning then rallied the innings with a much needed partnership of 94.

Ross reached his 50 in 34 balls with a big six over long-off after occupying the crease for 42 minutes, but while one hoped that he would go on to bigger things he tried to repeat the stroke and one ball later was stumped by Pursehouse off Gurman Randhawa’s left-arm spin.

Jonathan Tattersall and Leaning ran well between the wickets in a stand of 41.  The two Rotherham left-arm spinners did not prove ecnomicL, but when Tattersall tried to accelerate HIS INNINGS an injudicious shot saw him lbw to Oliver Jackson.

Leaning continued to play well, and his 85 in 121 balls was an excellent knock. He batted with the experienced Anthony McGrath on Saturday, but on Sunday his was the senior role. The middle-order batsmen's presence was needed at the wicket, but this did not happen.

Eddie Wilson benefited from a missed stumping, but was immediately caught when his lofted shot was pouched by Stuart Guy in the covers. David Girling was caught at the wicket before reaching double figures, and James Wainman was lbw as Sanderson claimed his second victim. 219-9 with two overs left.

The final blow came when the last pair took two easy runs but fancied an impossible third…and the throw from skipper Moorehouse was good enough. 228 all out and Rotherham had given themselves the chance of an outright win. Or was it the exuberance of Youth? Whatever it was, it was poor cricket.

Moorehouse and Pursehouse made a good start for Rotherham with 43 in 13 overs, but first-change Johnny Moxon had Pursehouse caught behind. Stuart Guy and Moorehouse added 38 before off-spinner Ross had Moorehouse caught by Chadwick. Randhawa took 34 balls,  cracking six fours in his 26 until he was clean bowled by Wainman.

It was left to Sanderson to hold his side together: coming in at 127-4, he dug deep to play a long innings. He did just that - building up an excellent 64 not out with seven fours and a six and seeing Rotherham to all eight points. He lost Smith to the Chadwick-Ross combination after they had put on 45 - but he and Wadsworth reached the line with 4.3  overs left.

It was the second day running that a Yorkshire Colt had controlled the match and seen his team to victory.
