Sayers bats Yorkshire to Seconds Trophy triumph

At the gallop: Yorkshire's left-handed opener Joe Sayers, who cruised to 48 not out with nine fours and a six

Opener Joe Sayers, above, cruised to 48 not out with nine fours and a six as Yorkshire overwhelmed Worcestershire by nine wickets in their Second Eleven Trophy match at Bingley.

Keen Yorkshire bowling was not the only threat to Worcestershire, who were asked to bat after losing the toss. Rain was never far away. Yorkshire's opening attack of James Lee and Ben Sanderson quickly struck - and within nine overs Worcestershire were 18-3.

A minor revival followed: the fourth-wicket pair added 28 as the first-change bowlers came on - but the fresh attack, although less economical, continued to take wickets: skipper John Blain bagged a brace and Lee Hodgson one as the batsmen fought their way to 86.

Rain crept down the valley and brought proceedings to a halt as the sixth wicket fell. The match was delayed by four hours, all but five minutes, and each innings was reduced to 29 overs. Worcestershire had six overs and a ball left...they lost their batting powerplay...and Yorkshire had four bowlers who had completed their reduced quota.

Clatter, bang, wallop was the order of the day - but Yorkshire found two bowlers to deliver the six overs remaining and keep things to manageable proportions. They did it with aplomb, conceding a mere 27 runs, and taking three wickets - two for Gurman Randhawa and one for Charlie Roebuck as the tail lost its way.

A total of 113-9 was fed into the Duckworth-Lewis calculating machine - and after much deliberation Yorkshire's target was declared to be 102 off 29 overs. Openers  Sayers and Callum Geldart set off at a rate of five an over when only three plus a little were needed.

Geldart was bowled at 49, but his replacement, Roebuck, joined Sayers, and they raised the rate from five an over to six and seven. The target was reached without any more fuss and bother - nine wickets still in hand when Yorkshire crossed the line.
