Skipper Alex Lees flogs 136 in Academy rampage
News categories
Acting skipper Alex Lees, above, thrashed 136 and left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa cleaned up with 4-71 as Yorkshire Academy crushed Hull and YPI by 133 runs in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League today.
Hull skipper David Barrick won the toss and asked Academy to bat on a good Chanterlands Avenue pitch - and when Callum Geldart was first out, dismissed by spinner Boasman at 156, I did feel that the hosts might be wondering if they had done the right thing.
A little later - as Lees and Jack Leaning put on a further 82 - the same thought arose. Lees, skipper for the day in John Blain's absence, hit 16 fours in his two-hour-and-43- minute stay, with some delightful square-drives and excellent running between the wickets. Geldart continues to be in excellent form - his 72 containing 14 fours.
Earlier in the season Jack Leaning struggled to make runs: he certainly did not struggle today - an excellent late cut started his innings, and he went on to play shots all round the wicket. Two towering sixes and five fours came in a top innings. Again, the partnership of Lees and Leaning was an education in how to run between the wickets.
299-4 was to prove a formidable target.
Opening bowler Jack Hargreaves broke the back of the Hull innings, clean bowling openers Andy Kirby and Chris Grey, and then having No. 3 Martin Watkin lbw. At 36-3 there seemed no way that Hull could save the match. Matthew Wilkinson hit a patient 31, while Ben Hugill attacked and had five fours in his 26.
Eventually, the spinners took over, and Randhawa continued his run of form - taking 4-71 in 15 overs. Jack Hughes gave little away, and duly earned figures of 2-12 in nine overs. An excellent catch at long-off by Hargreaves off Randhawa saw the Academy gain a full victory, and take eight points.
Coach Steve Oldham must have been delighted with his young side.
