Spin maestro Rashid sees points hope washed away

Mutual congratulations: bowler Adil Rashid and wicket-keeper Gerard Brophy, who snared Niall O'Brien

Yorkshire Carnegie went down by 14 runs to Northamptonshire Steelbacks under the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-ruined Friends Provident t20 match at Headingley Carnegie today, despite a splendid piece of bowling by Adil Rashid, above.

The leg-spinner helped to restrict Steelbacks to 151-7 by taking 3-23, his third consecutive three-wicket haul in the competition – but Yorkshire were still struggling on 51-4 in 7.1 overs when the rain came and ended the contest.

Winning the toss, Steelbacks looked like clocking up a big total as Lou Vincent and Chaminda Vaas rattled up 49 in six overs for the first wicket - but once they had been parted Carnegie took a grip on the rest of the innings through some accurate bowling, particularly by Rashid and Richard Pyrah.

It was Steven Patterson who made the initial breakthrough when Vass drove him fiercely to deep mid-off, where captain Andrew Gale held on to a great catch, diving to his left.

Rashid claimed his first wicket by having Niall O’Brien smartly stumped by Gerard Brophy before Pyrah sent down a beauty which the dangerous Vincent could only edge to Brophy to depart for his side’s top score of 38 from 31 deliveries, with two fours and two sixes.

The pressure was maintained, and the only other significant scores came from Andrew Hall, who ended unbeaten on 31 from 19 balls with four boundaries, and David Willey, who hit two fours and a six in his 12-ball 19.

Yorkshire got their reply off to a bad start as Jacques Rudolph in the first over drove Vaas high and straight - only to fall to an acrobatic catch by Willey, and when Gale hit Jack Brooks to Lee Daggett at wide mid-off the home side were 16-2.

Herschelle Gibbs drove Brooks for a straight six, but in attempting to steer his next ball to third-man he was caught behind for 19, and in deepening gloom Brophy nudged the same bowler into O’Brien's gloves. Anthony McGrath played some confident shots in reaching 18, but before his new partner, Jonny Bairstow, could face a ball the players came off.
