Storming Wardlaw ends Seconds' run of defeats

Iain Wardlaw: 4-10 in 12 balls to end trough of defeat

Paceman Iain Wardlaw, pictured, brought Yorkshire Second Eleven their first victory for almost three months with a 4-10 spell in 12 balls to despatch Northamptonshire by 37 runs in the 40-over Trophy competition.

Earlier Adam Lyth had led the way with 70 as a large crowd by Second Eleven standards at the Britannia Cricket Ground in Pudsey witnessed a record-breaking first-wicket stand of 137 by Lyth and fellow left-hander Joe Sayers after the hosts had won yet another toss.

These two provided the foundation of what was to prove to be a match-winning total of 244-6, cameo innings of 20s and 30s making up the balance. David Lucas, formerly of Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, was the most economical of the Northamptonshire bowlers on a ground where ones, fours and sixes were the norm - not a single three was scored all day and a mere dozen twos contributed to the match aggregate of 454.

It was going to be difficult on such a small ground to defend the Yorkshire total...and so it nearly proved. An opening 50 stand between David Willey and Andrew Reynoldson saw the visitors off to a good start, but three quick wickets - followed by two more 20 runs later - saw them reduced to 72-5 with a third of their overs gone.

The game swung back to Northamptonshire as David Murphy and Lucas broke the sixth-wicket record in Trophy matches between the two counties, running up 113.

Wardlaw returned to bowl the last three of his eight-over allocation: he conceded 14 in the first, but with the first ball of his seventh over he bowled Murphy, and with the fourth he bowled Basil Akram. The intervening over brought 11 runs and a run-out, but Lucas’s stumps were re-arranged by Wardlaw’s fifth ball of his last over to be followed by Tom Brett’s similar dismissal with his last ball: 4-10 in 12 balls was the match-winning performance.

It is not unusual for a batsman to be dismissed first ball. It is surely more unusual for two to be out first ball in the same innings. Yet three Northamptonshire men managed to be out first ball in this  innings - how unusual is that?

Steven Patterson was the first bowler to take two in two; David Girling managed it with the first two balls he bowled in Second Eleven cricket, and Wardlaw was the third. To their credit, three of the visitors’ batsmen survived hat-trick balls! One of these days, ye ancient scorer will record a Second Eleven hat-trick...

The two counties are taking up the cudgels again at Headingley Carnegie in the seventh Championship match of the Yorkshire Seconds’ season. So much depends on the weather.
