Tattersall triumphs with wickets and runs

Alex Lees: Century on Saturday...Academy's only wicket to fall on Sunday

Alex Lees, pictured, hit a century on Saturday - then had the doubtful distinction of being the only Yorkshire Academy wicket to fall as they trounced Cleethorpes by nine wickets in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League on Sunday.

Academy’s victory ended any hopes Cleethorpes had of challenging for the title. They opted to bat at Weetwood in excellent conditions, but were rolled over for 103 in 47 overs before the hosts ran home in 22 overs.

Cleethorpes openers Kirby and Osmond found it hard against Wainman and Moxon, but Osmond hit Wainman through the covers for the first boundary of the innings. Osmond was first to go as left-armer Wainman moved one back and an inside edge went on to his stumps.

Carlton left three overs later when his pull off Moxon ended in a superb diving catch by Ross at mid-wicket. The opening bowlers delivered eight maidens in 14 overs before the first change. Windeatt joined Kirby and hit Coad through mid-wicket before a tentative drive off the same bowler found Blain at mid-off.

Clewett  was next to go as Coad found the gap between bat and pad. 36-4 in the 24 over. Kirby had advanced to 23 in 78 balls, but he missed a long-hop from spinner Ross and Harrison lifted Coad straight to midwicket. Sunley seemed calm against the spinners until an ugly swing at Ross was held by Leaning at mid-wicket.

Cowlam and Thompson added 21 for the eighth wicket, and Cowlam had 18 when he was beaten by flight and stumped off leg-spinner Tattersall. Lumby was trapped in front first ball, but last-man Ellis prevented the hat-trick. Ellis and Thompson put on 22 in five overs to pass the 100 mark – but a misunderstanding ended the recovery as Ellis was run out.

Lees, fresh from his century on Saturday, looked in good nick with two confident straight-drives for four, but with a quickfire 33 on the board inside six overs the Academy suffered their only setback: a leg-side wide from  Lumby saw Lees overbalance and Cowlam pull off a fine stumping.

Tattersall and Leaning coasted their way through the 71 runs needed for victory, Tattersall peppering the cover field with backfoot drives in his undefeated 43 and Leaning returning to the pavilion on 36.
