The young ones put silver in Yorkshire cabinet

Silver for Yorkshire Academy: Skipper and Coach John Blain holds the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League Cup aloft after Saturday's triumph over Scarborough at Weetwood. To the extreme right is opener Alex Lees, who has captained the side on a number of occasions this season - and who has made his first-team debut in the CB40 competition. Yorkshire have silverware on the table! Twice! Hard on the heels of their triumph in the Under-17s National County Championship knockout competition they ran away with the giant Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire County Premier League Cup on Sunday.

Yorkshire Academy whipped Scarborough by nine wickets in the Weetwood final to lift the Yorkshire League Cup for the fourth time in a decade. Opener Alex Lees was Man of the Match for his 90 not out to add to his 91 in the League match the day before – but what seemed a run chase on the walk was set up by excellent all-round fielding and consistent bowling headed by Ben Coad’s 3-17.

Academy skipper John Blain got away to the right start by winning the toss and getting Scarborough in. Thanks to an excellent diving catch at square-leg by Will Rhodes the captain soon had Darren Harland back in the pavilion. Typical of a Scot, Blain gave nothing away before he handed over to Coad, who bowled a very good line, making it hard to score.

The second-wicket pair put on 33, but Andy Simpson got an edge and was held by wicket-keeper Henry Chadwick. Memories of the Scarborough openers amassing 220 in the opening match of the season raised Academy spirits even higher.

Blain turned to the leg-spin of Jonathan Tattersall, and Mark Tennant tried to quicken the scoring rate. His reward: to be caught at deep-mid-on by Blain. Scarborough captain Piet Rinke and Kunwar Bansil staged a minor recovery of 35 with some unorthodox batting – but off-spinner George Ross picked up the solo wicket of Rinke, well caught at backward-point on the reverse-sweep by Tattersall .

104-5…and 110-5 when Joe Padmore was lbw, unable to deal with the pace of Jonathan Moxon. Theo Smith struggled against the faster men, and was caught by Tattersall off the very accurate Coad.  122-6 became 127-7 when Lees took a good catch at mid-off to despatch Bansil. Tom Precious was run out by an accurate throw from Moxon, and at the end of the allotted 50 overs Scarborough had managed only 157-9.

The Academy’s regular openers, Lees and Tattersall , batted confidently, and ran well between the wickets. The 50 came up in 60 deliveries and 100 in 118. One chance was offered by Lees to a diving cover fielder, but Alex, who saw more of the strike than his partner, simply carried on as the heavier scorer.

Lees hit some fine ground shots through the covers, and he straight-drove three sixes. The limited Scarborough attack did itself no favours with 18 wides – and their only success came when Tattersall, who played an excellent holding innings of 44, holed out to Padmore at mid-on off Precious. By now only 16 runs were needed.

The target was reached in 28.3 overs, and the Academy team assembled to receive their richly deserved medals from League Secretary Colin Adamson. Previously, the Academy had won the cup in 2001, 2002 and 2009.

George Ross, from Otley, was star of the show for Yorkshire Under-17s when they overpowered Surrey Under-17s by six wickets at Grace Road on Thursday and Friday in the final of the National County Championship knockout competition (Second Gallery picture).

George captured 5- 76 as Surrey compiled a formidable 327 in the 100-overs-a-side match - and he then scored an unbeaten 112 out of Yorkshire’s 329-4, Eddy Wilson from Huddersfield hitting 76.
