Trophy win as bowlers bail out the batsmen

Surprise package: James Lee, whose three wckets turned a low score into a winning one

Pace bowler James Lee, pictured, led the way with three wickets as Yorkshire beat Warwickshire by 62 runs today at Knowle in the Second Eleven Trophy competition.

A surprising win when you consider that Yorkshire were bowled out for 168. It seemed a paltry score after Yorkshire had opted to bat at Station Road in the second of their Trophy matches this season. The total - off two and a half overs less than the 40 allowed  – was much less than had been scored in a league innings the previous Saturday on the same pitch.

Top scorer was debutant George Ross with almost a run-a-ball 32, with Lee Hodgson more staid in reaching 30 off 57 balls. Even Anthony McGrath in his first match back from injury was unable to make a significant contribution.

What one set of bowlers can do the other can surely match. The Yorkshire attack made its mark from the off with the first wicket in the third over and the second in the sixth, with 32 in the book. Two more went down at 40 and two more at 65.

Three runs later the seventh victim was captured. A second 25 partnership followed before the last three wickets fell with an unlucky 13 runs added to complete the hosts’ efforts. Every one of the five bowlers took a wicket - Lee the best with three. The Bearcubs were left with sore heads.

Battle resumes tomorrow at the Bull’s Head ground in Coventry when Warwickshire will be keen to wipe out the memories of this loss snatched from the jaws of victory.
