Wainwright and Blain's record fails to set test
An unbroken record-breaking ninth-wicket partnership of 52 rescued Yorkshire from a poorish score and took them to a passable total in their Second Eleven Trophy match against Durham at Darlington – but they still went down by six wickets?
Those ninth-wicket partners? David Wainwright and John Blain! Wainwright’s own score of 43, enhanced by four fours in the 40th over bowled by Chris Rushworth, was the best for the Rosebuds and Ruel Brathwaite’s 4-27 was the best analysis for the hosts.
The total of 154 off the 40 overs did give Yorkshire something to bowl at - but the Durham batsmen were up to the task. Ben Harmison, in particular, was not going to be beaten and his 83 not out off 81 balls with 11 fours and a mighty six was a match-winning performance.
Durham had six overs and two balls in hand when victory came. They should have faced a stiffer test.
