Wardlaw aiming for Scotland call-up

Yorkshire seamer Iain Wardlaw has been invited to train with the Scotland National set up and is in contention for a call-up to the Saltires squad ahead of the ICC World Cricket League Championship fixtures against Afghanistan in March.

Wardlaw, who was born in Dewsbury, has a Scottish father and through that direct link is eligible to play for Scotland in all forms of international cricket.

Having secured a contract for the 2013 season at Headingley, and aiming to build on his fledgling first class career, Wardlaw is looking forward to the new challenge with Scotland Cricket.

“It is a great honour to be called into the training camp with the national side,” said Wardlaw.

“It did come as a shock, but I’m relishing the opportunity of training with the national squad and hope that I can impress enough to force my way into the squad for the group of matches against Afghanistan.”

If selected, Wardlaw is expecting an interesting series of matches against Afghanistan, who are making excellent progress on the international stage.

“Afghanistan are going good,” added Wardlaw.

“No team will take them lightly and they have real quality with their bowlers who can bowl at pace and they have some good batters that are very strong in one-day cricket.

“There will be a lot of pressure on the matches coming up in March. Only the top two from the group can go through to automatic qualification to the World Cup in 2015. Even though Scotland are currently in second spot, we cannot afford to slip up and Afghanistan could be one of those teams that could embarrass you if you’re not prepared and focused.”

Wardlaw will travel to Edinburgh over the next two weekends to train at the National Cricket Academy in Scotland and will be hoping that a strong presence at the camp will force him into the selectors’ minds for the trip to UAE in March.
