As the 124th Scarborough Cricket Festival nears its end officials put pen to paper to preserve its presence in the domestic cricket calendar for at least another decade.

During the tea interval on Day 3 of the LV=County Championship match between Yorkshire and Hampshire Bill Mustoe (Chairman of Scarborough Cricket Club), Stewart Regan (Chief Executive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club), Gary Verity (Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire) and Jim Dillon (Chief Executive of Scarborough Borough Council) put pen to paper in front of the famous old Scarborough Pavilion.

The North Marine Road Ground received criticism in the press last summer for declining standards of repair, but there has been a concerted effort since to enhance the spectator experience.

Scarborough Cricket Club, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Scarborough Borough Council and the Festival’s sponsor, Welcome to Yorkshire, have worked in partnership to sustain cricket on the east coast. In addition the ECB’s NatWest CricketForce Scheme encouraged volunteers to assist the ground refurbishments at the end of March.

Stewart Regan, Chief Executive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, said: “Cricket on the East coast forms an important part of the Yorkshire cricket calendar and I’m delighted that Yorkshire CCC will be playing games here over the next decade. The ground has improved enormously over the last year, but the hard work does not end there. We will continue to work in partnership with Scarborough CC, the local council and Welcome to Yorkshire to attract new investment so that cricket on the East coast can be preserved long after this 10-year agreement expires.”

Bill Mustoe, Chairman of Scarborough Cricket Club, said: “This is a big day for Scarborough Cricket Club and fully justifies the improvements we have made to the ground over the last year. I would like to particularly thank Welcome to Yorkshire who have invested time, money and a deep appreciation of what staging Yorkshire cricket matches means to the East coast region.”

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire added: “We are incredibly proud to support this agreement which ensures that cricket can be played right here in Scarborough for a fantastic one hundred days over the next ten years. It’s a great way to guarantee that people will keep coming back into our region.”
