Yorkshire Academy let down by poor batting
Poor batting left Yorkshire Academy with very much the worst of it in their two-day one-innings drawn game with Cheshire Development XI.
Electing to bat, Cheshire had an early setback when James Wainman had Rowe caught by Jack Hargreaves. Khalid Sawas and Jonny Kettle had a stand of 72, followed by a third-wicket partnership of 90 by Kettle and James McCoy, from the Grappenhall club, who was particularly severe on the quicker bowlers, hitting nine fours and five sixes.
The introduction of spinners Jack Hughes and Booth slightly slowed the scoring rate, but the older Cheshire Development squad were able to declare after 92 overs.
A score of 401 was a formidable target. Opener James Hawley, of Neston CC, took three early wickets - skipper Alex Lees, 2, Billy Root, 0, and Irfan Amjad, 0 . The Academy were 16-3, and a partnership of 88 by opener Andrew Gorrod, 86, and Ben Elvidge, 29, was only a mini revival.
The side crumbled to 126 - only two batsmen reaching double figures. It was a poor batting display, albeit against older opposition. Indeed, the performance was one of the poorest I have seen from an Academy team.
