The Yorkshire County Cricket Club will inform its members at the AGM on Saturday 13 March 2010 that it has generated a Club record turnover of £8.4m and a record pre-tax profit of £699K.
The 4th npower Ashes Test held in 2009 was the major driver behind such an impressive set of figures, despite the fact that the match lasted only three days. However, the Club achieved impressive growth in all income areas, especially commercial revenue which was up 13.4% and subscriptions which were up 22.3%. The surplus for 2009 which has been signed off by the Club’s Board of Directors and auditors KPMG LLP, is up 90% on the same period last year although operational expenditure is also up by some £1m, around 19% largely due to the cost of staging the international matches last year.
The Club is delighted with the results especially given the current economic trading conditions and are particularly appreciative of the support they have received from their financial backers, as well as commercial partners.
Yorkshire Chief Executive, Stewart Regan said: “The last twelve months have seen the busiest period of activity since I joined the Club some 4 years ago. We have held two major international cricket events, including the 4th npower Ashes Test, we have commenced construction of the Carnegie Pavilion in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University , we have completely re-laid the outfield and installed new drainage and irrigation systems, as well as installing the largest replay screen in professional sport. This has meant some very long working hours for all of the staff here at the Club and I am very proud of each and every one of them for their contribution to another fantastic trading performance.”
The 2009 figures look impressive however they mask a number of challenges going forward, not least the need to generate sufficient cash to pursue our objectives in the coming months. The UK and regional economy is improving but is still some way from returning to the spending levels experienced in 2007 and 2008.
A concerted effort is required to control costs and attract new income with creative commercial offers for our customers both existing and new. We are delighted to be working in collaboration with a number of key partners in 2010 to maximise the opportunities presented by the second Pakistan vs Australia Test Match at Headingley Carnegie in July of this year.
