A very unpleasant hat-trick was averted as the weather relented sufficiently yesterday (Friday) to allow 86 overs to be bowled, although it was touch and go until 11.15am when men in whites and pads finally emerged.

The umpires expressed some concern about the bowlers slipping in the follow-through...but the only man who almost went base over tip was Umpire Paul Pollard, as he got into position for a possible run-out. Both sides were keen to have some batting and bowling on grass after two days in the pavilion.

Durham asked Yorkshire to take first knock, and they found it hard going - especially facing Liam Plunkett and Steve Harmison: I wonder how often previously some, if not all, of the Yorkshire team have faced two Test Bowlers at the same time.

David Girling, 27, and Ed Wilson, 21, played as steadfastly as anyone to add 44 for the fifth wicket. Yorkshire's innings was declared on the stroke of tea - which was taken to the sound of rain returning on the scorebox roof.

Play eventually restarted some 25 minutes late. Only one Durham wicket was taken - a smart catch at short cover by James Tattersall - but the bowlers were not disgraced, and all tightened up their lines after a few wayward deliveries.
