Yorkshire trio impress for England under 19s
News categories
Yorkshire’s three under 19 representatives, Jonathan Tattersall, Josh Shaw and Ryan Gibson all impressed in the third one-day international, but despite their heroics they could not stop South Africa moving into an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series with England, with two matches remaining.
Chasing 271 for victory, England struggled to get to grips with some tight bowling from South Africa and found themselves at 154-7 before the Yorkshire trio threatened an incredible victory. Tattersall smashed 83 from 76 balls and he was ably supported by Gibson 24 and Shaw 52 from 46 balls.
In the end England missed out by 10 runs with South Africa restricting England to 260-9.
After opting to bowl, England made a fine start as Shaw had Clyde Fortuin caught behind after Andries Gous had fallen caught and bowled off Tom Barber and Valli run out.
Yet the hosts recovered impressively from 48 for three, Oldfield playing with great fluency and being well by David Bedingham’s 28 and Jason Smith’s 49 not out.
Shaw resisted by ousting Oldfield and Sine Ntshona, yet could not stop the home side posting a commanding total.
Despite opener Callum Jackson appearing comfortable, he could only watch on as Tom Alsop, Harry Finch, Ed Barnard and Ben Duckett fell for single-figure scores.
Nqazibini Sigwili got rid of Alsop and Finch leg before, Corbin Bosch bowled Barnard and Ntshona had Duckett caught.
Tattersall responded impressively, scoring at better than a run a ball in an effort that belied his colleagues’ struggles.
Despite Valli pinning Jackson in front, Yorkshire’s Tattersall continued to profit with some glorious strokes alongside his county colleagues Gibson and Shaw.
But, despite an equally impressive attacking innings, Shaw could not see his side over the line and England were left to rue a poor start to their reply.
