Yorkshire hit their straps at the Kensington Oval as they overpowered Derbyshire by 60 runs in their Barbados Twenty20 Cup quarter-final at Kensington Oval today. Ryan Sidebottom with 4-20 ensured the Falcons were never in the hunt in their chase of Yorkshire’s 183-8.
Sidebottom took three quick wickets at the top of the Falcons reply as Derbyshire struggled to reach an imposing target. They ended their 20 overs on 123-8 to lose by 60 runs.
It was the best all round performance from a Yorkshire side in t20 cricket in recent memory and the challenge now is to back it up with more of the same.
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE KENSINGTON OVAL
Yorkshire won the toss and opted to bat first and Andrew Gale and Joe Sayers started brightly again. Sayers pulled Mark Footitt over deep square for six after the pair had only managed 19 runs from the first four overs.
Jonny Clare had Sayers caught on the square leg boundary by Garry Park for 19. David Wainwright, making his first appearance for Derbyshire against his old county after a winter move nearly dislodged Andrew Gale with his first ball, but the return chance fell just short.
At halfway Yorkshire were 77-1 and Wainwright gained revenge when he had his former captain caught at deep midwicket for 44 off 36 balls which included 6 fours.
Adam Lyth was lbw to Chesney Hughes for 20 from 12 balls, but Jonny Bairstow is having a great pre-season trip and his bat looks wide and strong. He looked set to explode when he’d reached 48 in 29 balls, with 3 fours and 3 sixes, but Footitt (3-36) returned and defeated him with a low full toss.
Gary Ballance (18 from 12) and Joe Root (15 from 7) were not content to linger. Root paddled swept his first ball for six and Ballance creamed a ball over the longest boundary as the Tykes posted a commanding total.
Sidebottom took two wickets in his first three balls as he had Wes Durston caught behind and bowled Clare a Yorker that would have tested the very best. Another Yorker saw off Hughes (13) in Sidebottom’s second over.
Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen collected 43 runs in 31 balls with 4 fours and a six. Garry Park scored 19 in 30 balls as Adil Rashid (3-20) and Azeem Rafiq (1-21) gave him nothing. Madsen was bowled trying to reverse sweep Rashid and Derbyshire were 86-4 at the start of the 13th over.
Iain Wardlaw was impressive with his 4 overs costing 22 runs, but Ajmal Shahzad was wayward conceding 29 runs from his 3 overs.
David Wainwright became Sidebottom's fourth victim. Paul Borrington finished unbeaten on 25 from 18 balls as the Falcons finished their 20 overs well short.
Yorkshire now play their Barbados Twenty20 Cup Semi-Final on Thursday morning at 11am at Windward. The opposition is yet to be decided. Victory would secure a final berth at 7.30pm Barbados time the same evening, whereas defeat would end their Twenty20 run in Barbados.
Also later today Leicestershire beat Combined Colleges & Campuses in a thrilling last ball finish.
