PROFILE

Adil Rashid was tipped for the very top early in his career, and his performances lived up to the hype. A leg-spinner who took six wickets on his Championship debut as a teenager, he has played one-day and Twenty20 international cricket for his country.

Rashid, who worked with the late spin guru Terry Jenner - Shane Warne’s mentor no less, has proved that he can be a match-winner with both bat and ball.

He will be the first to admit his development has hit the odd bump in the road along the way - the summer of 2011 was a difficult time and most would have expected him to have played more for his country by now - but there were signs in 2012 that he is certainly heading in the right direction.

Right him off from the international arena at your peril!

Ahead of 2013, Bradford-born Rashid is closing in on 300 wickets and 4,000 runs in first-class cricket, and he has entered the record books along the way.

In 2009, the player who has been involved with England at both limited overs World Cups scored hundreds in successive Championship innings against Hampshire and Lancashire as well as taking two five-wicket hauls.

It was the first time the back-to-back double had been achieved by a Yorkshire player since the great George Herbert Hirst did it in 1911.

If Rashid can enjoy even a fraction of the Hirst’s success, he will finish his career as a Yorkshire legend.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

2005 - Having already been spotted by Shane Warne’s mentor Terry Jenner, Rashid claimed 6-13 from 8.2 overs for Yorkshire’s Academy in a Yorkshire Premier League clash with Sheffield United CC in July. Scored 111 for the White Rose under 17s against Cheshire as an opener three days later.

2006 - Recorded successive centuries for Yorkshire seconds in July, and had therefore done enough to earn a first-team debut in a Championship match against Warwickshire at Scarborough later that month due to Darren Lehmann’s injury. He took 6-67 from 18 overs in the second innings of a thumping win.

2007 - Played for the MCC in the champion county fixture against Sussex at Lord’s in April having toured Bangladesh with England A (Lions) earlier in the year. Scored his maiden first-class century against Worcestershire at Kidderminster in August, and was named named PCA’s and Cricket Writers' Club’s Young Player of the Year in September.

2008 - Snared career best figures of 7-107 in a Championship defeat against Hampshire at Southampton in August before being awarded his county cap the following month. Took 65 first-class wickets in the summer, still the best return of his career to date.

2009 - Having toured India with England’s Test squad for experience in late 2008, he was called into the squad in all three formats for the New Year tour of the West Indies, although had to wait until June to make his 20-over international debut against the Netherlands at Lord’s in June, the World Twenty20 opener. Also made his ODI bow against Ireland at Belfast in August. Achieved that aforementioned rare double for Yorkshire later in the month.

2010 - Enjoyed the best all-round season of his first-class career by scoring 732 runs and taking 57 wickets. A haul of 26 wickets from 16 Twenty20 matches also earned him a deal as South Australia’s overseas player for their Big Bash campaign later in the year.

2011 - Won the Big Bash with the Redbacks before touring the Caribbean with the England Lions in February and March. Took eleven wickets in Yorkshire’s first Championship match against Worcestershire at New Road in April, but it was a summer he would rather forget.

2012 - Although he started the county season slowly, losing his place as the county’s number one spinner to Azeem Rafiq, he displayed encouraging form in the second half of the summer in tandem with Rafiq, especially with a five-for against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road in August. Also enjoyed a successful Champions League t20 campaign in October, and his batting was a particularly crucial part of qualifying wins over UVA Next and Trinidad and Tobago.
