PROFILE

Yorkshire’s Mr Reliable with the ball! Steve Patterson enjoyed the best season of his career in 2012 when his 48 County Championship wickets at 20.81 were double the amount of wickets taken by any of his colleagues.

Left out of the first game of the season, he replaced Iain Wardlaw in the side and grasped his chance with both hands to clinch four four-wicket hauls and one five-for as an immediate return to Division One was achieved.

Despite only playing ten List A and four Twenty20 matches in the 2011 and 2012 domestic campaigns partly in order to preserve him for the longer format, he proved his worth with the white ball too when the county travelled to South Africa for the Champions League t20 in October, 2012.

With injuries and absentees hitting the squad, Patterson took the new ball and claimed seven wickets from six matches, as well as keeping things tight - his accuracy is arguably his biggest asset.

A first-class debutant in 2005, Patterson has had to be patient with regards to getting regular cricket in a Yorkshire shirt, but the last three seasons have proved that it has definitely been worth the wait having taken 119 wickets.

Patterson took his only six-wicket haul in professional cricket during a 40-over match against Derbyshire at Headingley in 2010.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

2003 - Played for the Yorkshire Cricket Board in the first two rounds of the C&G Trophy. He took 3-11 from 7.2 overs in a round one win over their Northamptonshire counterparts at Wantage Road in August.

2005 - Debuted in first-class cricket for Yorkshire against Bangladesh A at Headingley in August, but did not take a wicket in a 126-run win. Also featured regularly the White Rose Academy and second XI teams through the summer as well as playing four 45-over Totesport League matches in September.

2007- Took two wickets with the last two legitimate balls of the match to secure a nerve-jangling contrived one-run win over Loughborough UCCE at Headingley in May.

2008 - Snared 2-18 from eight overs as Roses rivals Lancashire were bowled out for 89 at Headingley in a 50-over Friends Provident Trophy match in May. The match was eventually washed out due to rain.

2010 - With more opportunities coming his way due to England call-ups for Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad, he claimed Championship and one-day best hauls against Essex at Scarborough (5-50) and Derbyshire at Headingley (6-32). Finished the summer with 45 first-class wickets. He ran the New York Marathon in aid of the British Lung Foundation in November.

2011 - Posted a career best score of 53 in a Championship draw against Sussex at Hove in May, but did not have the same success with the ball as the previous summer.

2012 - Expertly led Yorkshire’s attack as Championship promotion was achieved with 48 Championship wickets - twice as many as the more experienced Ryan Sidebottom. Awarded his county cap in May, and also had to rearrange his wedding to Beth to feature at the Champions League t20 in South Africa in October.
