PROFILE

When Yorkshire needed him most, Dan Hodgson stood up to be counted. Without senior wicketkeepers Jonny Bairstow and Andrew Hodd through injury and unavailability for last October’s Champions League t20 campaign, the inexperienced gloveman earned his stripes on the world stage.

Hodgson, on a summer contract at that stage, was initially handed his chance in the latter throws of the 2012 Clydesdale Bank 40 competition when Gerard Brophy retired in August, impressing the White Rose management in the process.

But to do it against world stars such as Umar Gul with the pressure at its greatest demonstrated just how big a future the Northallerton-born player could have in the game.

Despite his main job being to take catches and affect stumpings, it was with the bat the then 22-year-old stamped his authority on first-team cricket.

In a qualifying match against Sri Lankans UVA Next at Johannesburg, Hodgson arrived at the crease with 60 needed to win off 7.4 overs when David Miller retired hurt.

He promptly caressed Pakistan international Gul to the cover fence during a 21-ball 18 before Miller returned to smash the winning runs.

Hodgson, who then spent the rest of the winter playing domestic cricket in Zimbabwe, further impressed with the gloves through the rest of the competition, earning high praise from coach Jason Gillespie as a result.

Career Highlights:

2005 - Played five matches for Durham’s under 15s in June and July, scoring a couple of twenties, a thirty and taking a catch.

2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 - Played three-and-a-half seasons of league cricket for Darlington in the North Yorkshire South Durham League before debuting for Durham’s Academy against a Northumberland Development XI in May, 2009.

2010 - Toured South Africa in March with Leeds/Bradford MCCU (University), playing in a couple of 40-over matches against Hampshire in Cape Town, the first of those at Newlands. Impressed for Leeds/Bradford with bat and gloves throughout the summer.

2011 - Played in a two-day friendly for Leeds/Bradford against Yorkshire at Weetwood in March before continuing his development in University cricket throughout the summer as well as moving league clubs to Middlesbrough. Hodgson debuted for Yorkshire seconds in a Twenty20 match against Nottinghamshire at Headingley in May. Scored 88 not out in a 40-over match against Worcestershire seconds in August.

2012 - Scored 64 on his first-class debut for his University against Surrey at the Oval in late March, almost helping to pull off a shock win. Then played in a similar match against Yorkshire at Headingley in April. On a summer contract with Yorkshire, he took advantage of Gerard Brophy’s retirement in August to play in the latter stages of the CB40 competition before impressing at the Champions League t20 in October. He even helped to affect the run out of Sachin Tendulkar in a match against the Mumbai Indians before signing to play for the Mountaineers in Zimbabwe for the rest of the winter.
