Yash aiming to play a merry toon

Newcastle-born youngster Yash Vagadia signed his maiden rookie contract with Yorkshire ahead of 2023, a summer which saw him score 673 runs in the second team.

The classy batter, a second-year student at Durham University – he is studying a joint honours in biology and chemistry, also gained recognition off the field later in the year. He was honoured by the Professional Cricketers’ Association in their Futures Awards, winning the top prize in their Academic Progression category.

Vagadia enjoyed a super 2022, captaining the county’s Academy and Under 18s teams and helping the second team with the Championship.

He has previously had a taste of action in Yorkshire’s first team, playing in a two-day friendly against Durham at Headingley prior to 2021. He scored an encouraging 49 opening the batting against an attack including names such as Raine, Rushworth, Potts, Carse, Borthwick and Coughlin.

He plays his club cricket in the North Yorkshire South Durham Premier League for Hartlepool.

The right-hander first represented Yorkshire at Under 14s level and has progressed through the age-groups and Academy, whom he led through 2022. He helped the Under 18s reach their 50-over national final and finish top of the Northern Conference of their three-day competition that summer, scoring two hundreds in a Roses win at Widnes in August.

He also scored four fifties in the second-team Championship triumph and is determined to develop his useful off-spin bowling.

In 2023, he also sub-fielded for England during Headingley’s Ashes Test victory over Australia.

In 2024, he will be targeting a competitive first-team debut.
