PROFILE
Richard Blakey was a right-handed batsman of sound temperament who was a graduate of the Elland Club and made his name as a youngster as someone who could make big scores.
When 18 he scored 273 not out for the Colts and at 20-years-old he made 204 not out against Gloucestershire for the 1st Team.
In his first full season (1987) he scored 1,387 runs, including four centuries, and was elected Yorkshire's Young Cricketer of the Year. He hit 221 for England A in Zimbabwe in 1989-90.
In 1988 when Yorkshire batsman were finding run making difficult, Blakey's improving wicket-keeping skills began to be utilised and ultimately won him the gloves from David Bairstow.
Blakey toured India with the England Team in 1993 but failed in two Tests before being displaced by Alec Stewart.
Blakey went on to serve Yorkshire as wicket-keeper batsman for 18 years and on his retirement at the end of the 2006 season he became a coach at the Club for a short period. He now has a number of business interests in the Leeds area.
