Princes Trust Players Visit

The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, in association with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the Yorkshire Cricket Board, are delighted to be running the second Prince’s Trust ‘Get Started with Yorkshire Cricket’ in Yorkshire.

Fifteen Young Offenders from YOI Doncaster were trained up over a 4-day intensive course beginning on Tuesday 1st June to gain their Cricket Young Leaders Award, First Aid certificate, Safeguarding Children qualifications, improve their confidence and develop communications and presentation skills.

Following their release from the Young Offenders Institution in around three months time, the Prince’s Trust will provide the young people with six months rehabilitation in which some of the youngsters will embark on their UK Cricket Coaching Level 1 and 2 with Yorkshire Cricket.

The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation were the first to run the first ever ‘Get Started with Cricket’ programme in February 2010 and have been awarded further funding from the Prince’s Trust due to it’s success.

Alison Giles, Community Marketing Manager said: “The Prince’s Trust Get Started programme is such a valuable scheme and we’re delighted to be involved. We hope to offer these young people the opportunity to develop their skills, have fun and give them a chance to start again on the right foot. For some of the youngsters we’ll be offering the opportunity to gain experience working in a world class sporting venue at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground.”

Yorkshire Cricket Engages Young Offenders

Yorkshire’s County Cricket Club’s full squad visited HMP Doncaster (Marshgate) Prison on 12th July 2010 to participate in a match against inmates.

The first team players and YCCC’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, Tom Summers, led a cricket skills session and five-over games with inmates who have successfully completed The Prince’s Trust Get Started with Cricket programme.

Yorkshire’s Captain, Andrew Gale, said: “It was quite nerve-wracking as I’ve never been to a prison before, but the young people seem really engaged by the programme and hopefully we can make a positive impact on them for when they’re released.”

Peter Branson, Regional Director for The Prince’s Trust in Yorkshire and The Humber, said: “At The Prince’s Trust we use sport to engage the hardest to reach young people. It is a practical and accessible way to teach life skills.”

Get Started with Yorkshire Cricket

Get Started with Cricket is The Prince’s Trust’s new engagement programme aimed at young people aged 16 to 25 who are not currently in employment, education or training.

The programme uses the theme of cricket to inspire young people to take the first steps to increase their confidence, skills and employability, whilst also gaining a nationally recognised qualification.
