StreetChance: Dewsbury
StreetChance is the urban solution to Chance to Shine, working in urban areas using facilities such as youth clubs, astroturfs and Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs).
StreetChance Dewsbury is a partnership between the Cricket Foundation, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Cricket Board and The Faith Network. The initiative provides free coaching in 12 local state schools as well as regular community coaching and competition in Dewsbury and Batley from Yorkshire Cricket Board coaches.
StreetChance Dewsbury launched on Friday 27th August in Crow Nest Park and Yorkshire players Adil Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad opened the showcase Street20 cricket tournament. The programme will expand to the Heritage Road MUGA and other areas of the town to help develop cricket and social cohesion in the most deprived areas of Dewsbury and Batley.
Target
- Young people aged 8-18 years
- Inner City areas and areas of social deprivation
- Areas with a lack of green space and traditional cricket clubs
- BAME communities
Benefits
- Increases involvement in cricket particularly with hard to reach groups
- Promotes community cohesion
Results
- 16 young people took part in the StreetChance Dewsbury launch including 1 girl and a large percentage of Asian youths.
- Last summer’s challenge reached 55-70 young people over 4 weeks and StreetChance Dewsbury aims to achieve similar figures
“StreetChance Dewsbury is an important step for both us, the Cricket Foundation and for the young people of Dewsbury. Cricket, through the StreetChance programme in London, has provided huge benefits for young people in urban areas, helping with integration, discipline and learning to win and lose. We hope that similar benefits will be clear to see in the young people of Dewsbury.”
Wasim Khan, CEO of the Cricket Foundation and former Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire cricketer.
