The Yorkshire Cricket Young Leaders Academy provides Young Leaders (aged 14-18 years) from across Yorkshire with the opportunity to gain relevant experience working in a professional sporting environment.
The scheme began in 2008 with 20 Young Leaders spending ‘A Day in the Life of Headingley Carnegie Stadium'. In 2009, 330 Young Leaders attended across eleven ‘A Day in the Life of Headingley Carnegie Stadium' days and eight Match Day Activity Management days including 15 Young Leaders from the Disability Sport Federation Young Leaders Academy.
Invites were sent to Young Leaders that showed outstanding achievement throughout the season to work at the One Day International England v West Indies and the 2009 Ashes Series at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground.
In 2010, the programme has been developed by Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the Yorkshire Cricket Board to create a sustainable programme which provides participants with additional qualifications and pathways in to volunteering opportunities.
There are currently 47 opportunities for School Sport Partnership, School and College Young Leaders Academies to gain experience working at:
-
A Day in the Life of Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground
-
Match/Event Activity Management
-
YCCC and YCB Events Management (across Yorkshire region)
It is estimated that around 600 students will take part in these activities in 2010.
In September 2010, The Yorkshire Cricket Young Leaders Academy will select 20 Young Leaders from the cohort that have helped during the season. These Young Leaders will then gain experience and qualifications in a range of areas over a one year period including cricket coaching qualifications and involvement with local cricket clubs. Young Leaders will be expected to volunteer 200 hours of their time to up-skill themselves and provide support to the Yorkshire cricket infrastructure.
